ìA Clash of Kings,î the second book in ìA Song of Ice and Fire,î is an epic fantasy novel written by American author George R. R. Martin.

The novel talks about the battle for the throne of the Seven Kingdoms. Those who wanted to claim the throne are Renly Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Daenerys Targaryen, Balon Greyjoy and Robb Stark. The present king, Joffrey Baratheon, was also among those who want to claim the throne.

When King Robert Baratheon died, his son Joffrey Baratheon and brothers Stannis and Renly claimed the throne of Westeros. Balon Greyjoy took the Iron Islands and confronted the western coast of the North, now being led by Robb Stark. On the other hand, Robb’s younger brother Bran Stark, went on a journey and found new friends named Meera Reed and Jojen.

With a desire to conquer the North and to prove himself to his father Balon, Theon Greyjoy seized Winterfell and imprisoned Bran and Rickon, who both disappeared in the night. Because of anger and refusal to admit his failure, Theon killed two unknown farmworkers whose body built was the same as Branís and Rickonís. He made people believe that Bran and Rickon were already dead.

Because of this, Starkís supporters trapped the castle with a force from House Bolton. Theon had a conspiracy with Bolton’s son, Ramsay Snow. The Bolton soldiers turned their attention on Starkís supporters, without Theon knowing that he had also opened the possibilities for the Boltons to succeed. The Boltons were triumphant to destroy Winterfell and kill its people. They were also able to capture Theon.

A wildling-turned-castle servant named Osha, saved Rickon. Bran, together with Meera, Jojen, and his servant Hodor, took their journey to north.

In the Battle of Blackwater Bay, Stannis Baratheon’s soldiers moved to King’s Landing. There, they launched assaults. The Baratheon army outnumbered the defenders of Lannister, but through Tyrion’s leadership, the Lannister defenders were able to burn the bay area with a “wildfire.î This prevented Stannis’s army from fleeing.

Ser Davos Seaworth, whose ship was destroyed by wildfire, was nearly killed during this battle. While guarding the castle, Tyrion was attacked by one of Joffrey’s soldiers, but was rescued by his landlord named Podrick Payne.

Daenerys Targaryen, accompanied by knight Jorah Mormont, then journeyed to east. Her remaining servants and three baby dragons were also with her. They found a sure path to the city of Qarth. Daenerys baby dragons made her infamous in Qarth. Thirteenís leader named Xaro Xhoan Daxos, who was among the most well-known traders in Qarth, befriends Daenerys and her team. But Daenerys refused to give even one of her dragons in exchange of the friendship. This doomed her desire to conquer the throne of Westeros.
